HPBS commences its activity in Spain, by setting up one of the largest Biogas Treatment Plants in Europe

Heat & Power Services Ltd have landed in Spain, and have done so through our Spanish and Portuguese Iberian division Heat & Power Biogas Services S.L., which forms part of the team that set the expansion of the Biogas Treatment Plant (BTP) in Valdemingómez, Madrid in motion.

The new installation has been supplied by the Canadian engineering company Greenlane Biogas, who, with more than 135 treatment plants in 19 countries and more than 30 years of experience, is one of the leading companies in the sector.  Greenlane Biogas boasts different treatment technologies which can adjust to different scenarios, regardless of the specific requirements of each project; be them with waste producers, gas companies or project developers, helping to convert a product of low starting value into a valuable, renewable and low-carbon resource.

Greenlane Biogas engineers during the installation of the Vadedomingómez plant – Madrid.

The BTP, which thus far has been injecting up to 100 GWh per annum of thermal energy into the Grid, now sees its capacity increased to up to 180 GWh per annum, which is equivalent to the gas consumption of 20,000 urban households.  In so doing, it has become one of the largest biogas treatment plants in Europe and is continuing the Spanish capital’s commitment to sustainability.

This development has contributed to achieving the targets established under the National Integrated Energy and Climate Plan 2021-2030 (NIECP) which in the case of renewable energies is set at 42% by 2030.

The plant expansion, promoted by the Madrid city council and led by PreZero, the PTB management company and an environmental management specialist, enjoys a budget of nearly 7 million euros of which €656,000 is financed by The European Regional Development Fund (ERDF).

The project, which commenced in June 2021, has benefitted from the collaboration with an international and multidisciplinary team in which specialists from Canada, Germany, the United Kingdom and Spain have all participated.

In alliance with Greenlane Biogas, this is how we have begun our journey in the renewable gas sector in the Iberian Peninsula, with substantive on the ground activity, just as we have been doing for over 10 years in more than 60 renewable and innovative projects in the leading European markets, with a particularly strong presence in in the United Kingdom and key references in countries such as Sweden, France or Ireland, amongst others.

Heat & Power Biogas Services forms part of the team in charge of this project.

We have entered a growth market, as in the case of Spain, which has the potential to be at the forefront of the sector in Europe, as data from Spanish Biogas Association (AEBIG) clearly demonstrates.

As can be seen, we have strengthened our commitment to a sustainable world and continue our commitment to a sector, namely renewable gases, which is beneficial to society and environmentally friendly.
