Eagle Ridge – An example of energy sustainability

In May of this year, we set up a new project to obtain biomethane from biogas streams of landfill origin which we had sourced in the USA or more specifically, Missouri.

It was from this territory that the first expeditions to conquer the Wild West set off in their quest to expand the recently created United States of America.

Even today you can still see, as if suspended in time, those towns on the banks of the Mississippi river which would one day become the economic engine of the country; locations such as Saint Louis which went on to be the fourth largest city in the country thanks to its strategic commercial importance between the East and West.

This was a land of adventurers, pioneers and romantics who shaped the country’s history. Important figures such as Abraham Lincoln and Mark Twain grew up in this characteristic region of the United States of America and would become representative of the people.

Just half an hour’s drive by car from the banks of the Mississippi, the border between the states of Illinois and Missouri, lies the small town of Bowling Green which is where the Eagle Ridge landfill was sealed under the management of Meridian Landfill.

This project has been developed by Vision RNG, a North American company with its head office in Canonsburg PA. The company was founded in 2021 with funding from Vision Ridge Partners and is managed by a team of experienced and multidisciplinary professionals with decades of experience in the petroleum, gas and renewable gas sectors.

Meridian Landfill’s environmental services have always considered landfills to be highly engineered structures which deliver a vital resource to local communities and on this basis, the new project seeks to continue providing sustainability both in terms of waste management and energy generation.

The project’s main objective is to obtain a stream of biomethane from the treatment of landfill biogas streams which provide a series of environmental and economic benefits to the area.

The process combines a range of biogas treatment technologies in order to obtain the biomethane. This biomethane, which is a carbon neutral energy product, contributes to a reduction in both greenhouse effect emissions and the dependence upon fossil fuels, making use of the existing natural gas infrastructure.

The Canadian company Greenlane Renewables, a specialist in biogas upgrading systems, is the supplier of the biogas treatment technology selected for this project. By means of a purification system using pressurised water, up to 1,500 Nm3/h of landfill gas is treated with nearly 10 million cubic metres of biomethane obtained per annum.

The obtained biomethane is then channelled through the interstate Panhandle Eastern gas pipeline (owned by Energy Transfer) where it is finally used as vehicle gas in the form of Bio-CNG for delivery vehicles in companies such as UPS and Amazon.

We have participated in the Eagle Ridge project together with dozens of professionals in the sector and of different nationalities where British, Spanish, American, Canadian, Mexican and Indian engineers have made it possible for the conversion of landfill gas into clean energy to be an effective way to recycle and reutilise this valuable resource. This in a world in which wasting energy is quite simply a waste of time.

At HPBS we will continue to back projects of this nature, in a sector in which sustainability and respect for the environment are always the priority.
